Coaching

an intelligent partnership for aligned action

If I define coaching in my own words, it is an intelligent partnership between someone who wants to grow and move toward their goals, and someone who has the stance and the techniques to support that journey.

What matters here is the word intelligent. This work relies on the continuous use and development of both analytical and emotional capacities on both sides. Coaching, as I practice it, is about thinking together with clarity, depth, and responsibility until insight translates into action.

Coaching Focus Areas

Coaching may begin with a desire to support a valued professional, develop potential, prepare someone for greater responsibility, improve performance, rebuild motivation, navigate a promotion, transition or change, or grow in response to feedback or assessment. The focus of the work depends on what is actually needed to move forward.

How Coaching Works

Foundation

Trust

The coach's first and foremost responsibility, beyond honoring the confidentiality required by coaching ethics, is to create an environment of trust and psychological safety.

Empathy, compassion, and non-judgment are the keywords that define this space, and only in such an environment can one talk freely and hear oneself honestly. When vulnerability is met with acceptance, what often stays beneath the surface can emerge, enabling coaching to address the issues that truly matter.

Trust is thus the prerequisite for every transformation that follows.

Transformations

Self-Confidence

The coach's role in mirroring the coachee results in realistic self-awareness and self-worth, beyond underestimation and overestimation.

Coaching also develops the capacities from which self-confidence naturally grows: emotional regulation is strengthened by learning to stay with difficulty in the face of challenges, resilience is built through recovering from setbacks, and other skills develop as experience is translated into feedback for learning and growth. Together, these capacities allow you to discover that you are capable of more than you thought, build inner strength, move beyond self-imposed limits, and develop a stronger basis for making difficult decisions.

The kind of self-confidence that comes through coaching is thus solid and becomes a long-term inner resource.

Clarity

The way your coach listens to you and reflects back what they observe allows you to realize your own patterns of thought, challenge your contradictions, discover and integrate blind spots, gain perspective, and zoom out to see the bigger picture.

This cognitive flexibility enables you to update your frames of thought and gain greater clarity about yourself and your goals. Clarity before action becomes an antidote to confusion, inner friction, inhibition, and indecisiveness.

Your coach also invites you to explore what truly matters to you (values) and challenge your self-imposed limiting thought patterns (saboteurs). Through this increased self-awareness, you gain the clarity to prioritize more effectively and make informed and lasting choices.

Energy

Greater self-confidence and clarity naturally contribute to increased energy by reducing inner friction and self-doubt.

However, coaching's contribution to your energy goes beyond this: as your coach repeatedly invites you to consider what is possible, you develop greater cognitive flexibility and begin to adopt a more solution-oriented mindset. Over time, this can strengthen your positive outlook, a skill particularly valuable in leadership.

Finally, the coaching relationship is itself a source of motivation, as your coach's belief in you, advocacy for you, and encouragement can be deeply energizing.

Result

Action

A person working on themselves in a trusted partnership, having grown in self-confidence, attained greater clarity, and increased their energy, naturally takes action towards their desired goals.

Furthermore, the coach acts as a catalyst in translating these transformations into action by encouraging you to move beyond your comfort zone, set new precedents, and gain momentum.

Action taken as a result of coaching is not just any action; it is purposeful action that comes from a place of coherence and brings a deeper sense of meaning, as who you are and what you do are aligned.
